Its June and that means one FANTASTIC thing, it’s Pride Month in Munich! Time to get out and celebrate CSD!
But are you in the know about what is really going on? All the exciting activities?…or even what the acronym stands for?
Chill Mariah. That’s actually a pretty simple answer, CSD is just an acronym for ‘Christopher Street Day’ aka the German equivalent of Pride.
Pride Month in Munich: History of Christopher Street Day
Munich has (for the most part) always been a great ally of our community. The city held its first ever CSD Parade on June 28th, 1980.
With the name, Christopher Street Day, being chosen as a commemoration of the famous Stonewall Riots that took place on June 28th,1969 at the Stonewall Inn on Christopher Street in New York.
Pride Month in Munich: Celebrations
This year’s CSD motto is “Queerer Aktionsplan Bayern Jetzt!”. As of now, Bavaria is the only state without an equality and discrimination plan.
Since these numbers demonstrate: Homosexuality and trans hostility in Bavaria IS a problem, this needs to be ended. And we are calling for it A👏 S👏 A👏 P 👏
It is time to start recording hate crimes against queer people in Bavaria’s police statistics. The curriculum should include LGBTQ+ diversity, the gap in consultation should be closed, special accommodations for LGBTQ+ refugees should be created, etc.
All of these measures should be developed and implemented by a state representative in conjunction with queer organizations. Thus, this is a motto (and fact) that we believe to be perfectly on point of what is desperately needed in this day and age.
Pride Month in Munich: Parade
Even though we have two full weeks of Pride this year, the annual Parade is officially on June 24, 2023. You can see the full map of the parade plans below from CSD München
(The largest crowds are usually around Gärtnerplatz, Marienplatz and Isartor.)
